UK For More International Pressure On Syria

LONDON: Britain has called for “stronger international pressure” on Syria Monday in the wake of a deadly crackdown on protesters in Syria on Sunday. But still it fell short of calling for a military intervention in the country which has long been violating all the established norms of democracy.

The overwhelming majority there seeks to oust the despotic ruler Bashar al Assad. But the president Assad is not relenting and is continuing with his deadly crackdown on the rebel and otherwise masses.

Foreign Secretary of Britain William Hague told he wanted a stronger international pressure all round, and for it to be effective only western powers were not enough. He was speaking to BBC Radio on the news of 140 people being killed Sunday in Syria.

He said it was required from Arab nations and from Turkey that had been very active in convincing President (Bashar al) Assad to follow reform instead of carrying out these appalling actions.”

Britain, France, Germany, Portugal and the United States have all been seeking for long some sort of UN Security Council denouncing of the conditions in the country.

He expressed he would also like United Nations Security Council to pass a resolution to denounce this violence, to call for the release of political prisoners, to call for addressing the humane grievances.

He told he found the action very difficult on the part of the Security Council due to the internal divisions present there and the situation was very frustrating.

“It’s not a remote possibility, even if we were in favour of that, which we’re not,” he said, referring to achieving any unanimity in the council on the question of Syria. Notably Russia and China have been opposing any external intervention in Syria.

There was no prospect of a legal, morally sanctioned military intervention in his view. And therefore other ways of persuading the regime and of trying to help the situation in Syria are required.

The city of Hama has become a flashpoint of protests now for long. In the country which has been passing through a long phase of rebellion; the number of those killed in this city only on Sunday was over 100 as per the activists’ accounts. Dozens were killed in other cities.
